ORLANDO, Fla. – As Alex Poythress continues to expand his game, his recruitment is also widening.

On Tuesday night, after the AAU Super Showcase, the 6-foot-7 Northeast (Tenn.) forward picked up an offer from Duke and head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

“It felt pretty good,” Poythress said Thursday morning. “It was pretty exciting to talk to Coach K. He said he saw me play at the Super Showcase and Peach Jam, and he liked what he saw.”

More on Recruiting

Poythress has spent much of the month looking to become more of a perimeter-oriented player, showing off his range and shooting ability. He sees himself as a small forward at the next level, and the improvement in his ball-handling and off-the-dribble game are prime examples.

“I’ve played pretty decent,” Poythress said. “I was trying to get better as player overall.”

Poythress, who ranks No. 15 in’s Top 100, is also hearing from Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Florida, Memphis, Louisville, Connecticut, Ohio State, Texas and Alabama.

He said there is no favorite right now, despite the new offer.

"There's no pecking order," Poythress said. “I’ll probably cut my list in a week or two."

Five-star Alex Poythress adds Duke offer

Hey mmmvegas-

What exactly are the rules? According to some articles, Coach K offered him the scholarship on the phone AFTER the tournament, but while he was stil in Orlando. I'm curious, what exactly are the rules here?

Not necessarily. The AAU tournament must be complete before a coach can contact the player. It might be a minor violation. We'll find out soon, if so. Especially since we're talking about Duke basketball here. The media would blow even a minor violation out of the water.

Is it legal for Coach K to speak with a recruit last Tuesday? Or does Duke operate under a different set of rules than other NCAA Division 1 schools? In the evaluation period, a college coach can watch a player or visit a high school, but can't talk to a player off the college's campus.
