San Diego State got arguably the nation's best on-ball defender in Winston Shepard. (Adidas Nations)

Looking ahead to next season, San Diego State was missing just one key ingredient: a lockdown defender on the wing who could guard multiple positions.

The Aztecs got what they needed on Thursday, as top-50 senior Winston Shepard committed to Steve Fisher’s program, a source told CBSSports.com.

Shepard is a 6-foot-8 small forward from Findlay Prep (Nev.) and one of the best defensive players in the country. He has terrific athleticism and is very difficult to contain in the open floor. Shepard has improved his jumpshot over the past year, and he loves to crash the offensive glass for tip-ins and putbacks.

After his performance against Jabari Parker at the Hoop Hall Classic in January, Shepard’s stock rose in the eyes of many. He has limitless energy, and was not afraid to chase Parker and force him into bad shots from the perimeter.  Shepard’s size, length and athleticism enable him to guard players at different positions. We’ve seen him guard everyone from point guards to post players – and be effective at it.

Shepard saw recent interest from teams like Connecticut, St. John’s and Oregon, while New Mexico, UNLV, Oklahoma State and UTEP have all been involved for a long time.

He joins guard Matt Shrigley and forward Skylar Spencer in San Diego’s 2012 recruiting class. Transfers Dwayne Polee (St. John’s), J.J. O’Brien (Utah) and James Johnson (Virginia) are also sitting out this season for the Aztecs.

With the stud backcourt of Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley also returning, the future looks very bright for Fisher’s program.

You are such an idiot Lance. Maybe if you did a little research, you'd know that Long Beach State (Big West) was on ESPN 5 times this year while the Aztecs (Mountain West) haven't been on ESPN in years. Exposure is better in the Big West period. Another thing you should know is Kawhi was drafted 1st round despite the poor exposure. Winston Sheppard is going to the NBA. Don't be stupid and think no one will notice him in the Big West. Idiot.

I have a lot of respect for SDSU and UNLV.  A lot!!!  But the Mountain West (this year the best conference on the West Coast) and the Big West are not where a young man is going to get max exposure.  I am happy for the Aztecs.

But the love the national media give them (reluctantly unfortunately) isd not what the other conferences and schools get that are "back East".  Not saying it is fair.  But that is just the facts!

This year SDSU and UNLV have gotten some love.  But each loss by them and the National Media makes the "their a nice program, but are they for real" comments.  Again, not fair and really not correct.  SAint Mary's, SDSU, UNLV, New Mexico, jsut to name a few, are having fantastic years.

Yet they still get little love.  And that was my point.  Shepard will NOT get the exposure a Top 50 recruit could get "back East."  But, I am happy for the Aztec faithful, and pull for them against anyone but UNLV and my Kentucky Wildcats!!

Nice try Vegas Lance. Your jealousy obvious classic. You obviously don't remember UNLV winning National Chapionships when they were in the Big West. Who cares if the Aztecs are moving to the Big West in basketball. They are going to be a traveling rock star show like the Rebels in the early 90's. The have home and homes for years against Arizona, USC, UConn, Memphis, Louisville, Cal...the program is getting better and better. Final fours and a national championship are very real possibilities now. Go Aztecs!

Good liuck to Shepard......in obscurity in the Big West Conference.  At least this year, and next, for SDSU, they have relevance in the Moutain West.  But this kid wants to play in the Big West?!  Enjoy playing the dregs of California!  NO TV coverage.

Big mistake for a kid that could play in a much more visible confernece.

This is only the beginning.  Everybody should take a look at what he is after in the way of top 100 players for the class after this.  We are chasing as many as 7 top 100 players and looking good with many.  5 years ago we would not even be considered with any of these guys. Now we are in contention for many of the ones we go after.  Fun time for Aztecs fans.  We have waited for years.

Go Aztecs!

The Aztecs get a player with height who can play the 1 through 5 positiions AND can lockdown the other teams' best weapon? Sweet.

Can't wait for this to become official. I'll confess to being nervous after watching from us (sorry, twocoach!) last year.

While I still have high hopes for this year, next season looks very, very good for SDSU. Congratulations.

Hell yeah.... I still wasn't over that game from last night, check the posts on AztecMesa... and now let's just say I am quite happy.

If the chemistry on next years team can be solid... and players are unselfish w/ getting a few less minutes (Franklin, Tapley, Rahon) next years team is going to be sick!!    We might have a similar record at this point next year w/ UNLV and New Mexico having better teams as well, plus a tough non conference schedule... but I will expect when we play average teams to blow them out of the gym
